How to make chocolate scented play dough

We are big play dough fans here. It’s my go to activity for when I need the children to play independently while I get something done and it’s something I know that both of them love to play with. This weekend I made a big batch of different scented and coloured play dough as I imagine that as UK Lockdown goes on we’ll be turning to this indoor play favourite time and time again. Today I thought I’d share with you how I make this chocolate scented play dough which is perfect for using as mud in tuff trays and small world play. Not to mention it smells just like hot chocolate!

You will need…

2/3 cup of plain flour

1/3 cup of hot chocolate powder

1/2 cup of salt

2 tsp cream of tartare – I bought a big tub from amazon which works out a lot cheaper than buying the sachets.

1 tbsp baby oil

1 cup cold water

It couldn’t be easier to make… simply combine all of the ingredients together in a saucepan, add to the heat – the hotter the better! – and stir until you can form a ball.

Remove from the heat and allow to cool.

Store your play dough in an airtight container or zip lock bag and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to play!

As long as it’s stored correctly between play you can use this play dough time and time again.

Ways to play with Chocolate Scented Play Dough

Use as mud in small world’s for plastic bugs and animals like pigs and elephants. It would make a great section for a farm or zoo themed tuff spot!

A chocolate café! Gather tea cups, reusable cake cases and biscuit tins and set your little one the challenge of running their own chocolate café. You could add some vanilla scented play dough and some sprinkles or marshmallows to top their creations!

Make dinosaur foot prints with your plastic dinosaurs.
